PLEASE EMAIL CITY COUNCIL TODAY! Why? Because with a proclamation, we have an official announcement that will allow us to carry the value of Austin's music deeper into our community. We will also have a document that shows that our city government truly values the economic contribution and quality of life that Austin music adds to our city. "The Live Music Capital of the World" has to be more than just a slogan to attract people to Austin!

SUBJECT: Proclaim 2008 "The Year Of Austin Music"
Dear Mayor Wynn, Mayor Pro Tem Dunkerley, Council Member Martinez, Council Member Kim, Council Member Leffingwell, Council Member McCracken, and Council Member Cole;
I am joining a citizen campaign to urge you to proclaim 2008 as "The Year of Austin Music" because our local musicians and related small businesses need the support and recognition of our entire city. As we witness our population booming, Austin's music scene is in great danger of being "lost in the construction dust" and overlooked by thousands of current and new Austin residents who know little of what makes Austin the truly amazing city that it is.
Did you know:
- Austin musicians now make less than they did for nightclub performances in 1987? "I made the same amount of money each night playing in Austin clubs in 1966 as I did in 2006. But back then, one night of work paid my rent."
----John Inmon, guitarist for Townes van Zandt, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Delbert McClinton, Marcia Ball, Omar and the Howlers, the Lost Gonzo Band, Bruce Robison, Pat Green, Michael Martin Murphy, Jerry Jeff Walker
- Audiences at local music venues have decreased up to 70% in the last 15 years, while Austin's population has nearly doubled?
- Almost no Austin musicians can make a living playing in Austin, and that many pay to play after their expenses are tallied?
- The number of Austin music venues has decreased steadily in the last 10 years and there are less than 10 live music venues on 6th Street?
These problems have a very simple solution: mobilizing Austinites and encouraging them to come out into the music community to see Austin music.
Troy Dillinger and "TheYearOfAustinMusic.org" is creating a networking society that will promote the growth of Austin's music and related small businesses, as well as launching a public service campaign that will encourage Austinites to "see one band every month during 2008".
I am lending my support to Troy Dillinger and "TheYearOfAustinMusic.org" as they take on the task of promoting and networking Austin's music and small business communities to survive this influx of new Austinites and thrive once again. I ask you to do so as well by committing to taking action that will ensure the survival of this way of life which allows The City of Austin to be called "The Live Music Capital of the World".
Please take action on a proclamation naming 2008 as "The Year of Austin Music" and present it to Troy Dillinger and "The Year Of Austin Music .org". This simple act will allow for the first wave of public awareness of Austin's rich musical legacy and its current state of need.
Thank You.
